# Creating Roles & Permissions
## Create roles & permissions within your admin illume account.
Step 1: Open Roles and Permissions
Select your church name from the top navigation.
From the dropdown menu, click **Roles and Permissions**.
Step 2: Review Pre‑Made Roles
On the Roles and Permissions page, you will see two pre‑made roles, including **Organization Admin** and **Organization Owner**.
To see what access a pre‑made role includes, click into the role.
You can now review which features are toggled on and off for that role. Note that you cannot edit the settings for **Organization Admin** or **Organization Owner**.
### Step 3: Create a New Custom Role
To create your own custom role, click **Create Role**.
Enter the role **name**. Add a brief **description** of what this role can do. Next, configure the permissions by toggling settings on or off for this role.Choose which features this member will have access to.
You can further customize access by clicking the down arrows on each section to expand detailed options and determine what access the role has to each specific feature.
When you are finished configuring permissions, click **Create Role**. Your new custom role is now created.
### Step 4: Assign a Role to a Member
To assign the new (or any) role to someone, go to **Community \> People**.
Click **Manage**.
Remember that roles can only be assigned to **active** accounts. Select an active account. Add a role to this member by opening the role selector and choosing the role you would like to apply.
Then click **Add Role**.
The user has now been assigned that role.
### Step 5: View or Edit a Member’s Roles
To view or change a member’s role status, open their profile, where you can see all roles that have been assigned.
To edit their roles, click **Actions** and select **Edit Roles**.
From here, you can remove existing roles or add additional roles as needed, then click **Save** to apply your changes.
